Walmart employees held protests starting last Thursday in cities all across the United States, demanding better pay and demanding the company rehire workers who were fired they say because they previously demonstrated against the company. The rallies come immediately after fast-food workers staged walk-outs at fast-food restaurants in 60 U.S. cities to call for hourly pay of $15 instead of minimum wage. According to organizers, many Walmart workers earn the minimum wage, which varies from state to state but typically hovers near $7 to $8 per hour.
While Wal Mart does employee many people, and the owners are some of the wealthiest people in the nation, Politifact has verified a statement from Congressman Alan Grayson (D-FL) who opined that Walmart employees are paid so little, they often seek government programs for help. “In state after state, the largest group of Medicaid recipients is Walmart employees. I’m sure that the same thing is true of food stamp recipients. Each Walmart ‘associate’ costs the taxpayers an average of more than $1,000 in public assistance,” Grayson wrote in a Huffington Post column. He doubled down in a subsequent interview with The Young Turks show on Current TV, saying Walmart employees represent “the largest group of food stamp recipients.”
In this video, Fox News’ Eric Bolling, who appears to me no more than a talking bobble head, has the unmitigated gall to suggest that Wal-Mart should fire protesting workers who are only trying to make their lives better by trying to force Wal-Mart to raise wages and provide healthcare benefits. It would also lessen the burden on the government in the form of less people on “entitlement” programs.
