On FOX News during an interview with host Chris Wallace, Texas Senator Ted Cruz told Senate Republicans if they didn’t filibuster to continue the fight to defund Obamacare, he would see it as a vote for Obamacare.
Any vote for cloture, any vote to allow Harry Reid to add funding to Obamacare with just a 51-vote threshold, a vote for cloture is a vote for Obamacare, and I think Senate Republicans are going to stand side-by-side with Speaker Boehner and House Republicans, listening to the people and stopping this train wreck that is Obamacare.
Actually, quite a few Senate Republicans thought the “defund Obamacare or shutdown the government” strategy by Cruz and his buddies was political suicide. This past week, Cruz caught lots of heat from members of his own party for it. Rand Raul, a Senator who opposes Obamacare, says the Democrats will win this battle.
Chances of Senate Republicans “standing side-by-side” with Cruz seem pretty slim. Not impossible, but slim.
He even admitted to Wallace that he has no idea how many votes he has.
Wallace also asked Cruz what his end game plan was, “because the government is going to shut down a week from Monday”. Cruz responded, while insisting a government shutdown would be Harry Reid’s fault:
If Harry Reid kills the bill in the Senate, the House should hold its ground, and should begin passing smaller continuing resolutions, one department at a time, Cruz explained. It should start with a continuing resolution focused on the military. Send it over, see if Harry Reid is willing to shut down the military in order to force Obamacare on the American people.
