In Durham, North Carolina, a grieving family would like to know exactly what happened to 17-year-old Jesus Huerta, who died from a gunshot wound to the head while sitting in the back of a police car.
According to police, Huerta was picked up by officers early Tuesday Morning after they were called by his mother, Sylvia Fernandez, because they believed he left home do drugs. Law enforcement found Huerta two blocks away from his home and told him they were going to have to arrest him for a previous trespassing warrant. As he was in the back of the police car, police say they heard a loud sound and jumped out of the moving vehicle that eventually was stopped by running into a parked van. When they got back to the vehicle, they said they noticed Huerta had a gunshot wound to the head.
Evelyn Huerta, Jesus’ sister, said the police haven’t given them much information.
We don’t have any answers. We want to make sure it’s him because we still have that thought, the possibility that it’s not him, that it was a mistake.
His brother, Raziel Huerta, also has questions.
We don’t know if he had a gun. We don’t know where the gun came from. Why wasn’t he searched? We don’t know when we are going to get the body. What was the cause of his death?

Friday, the family were joined by supporters as they protested the Durham police for their lack of answers following the death of Huerta. There were also demands for a new police chief.
If a male being killed by a gunshot wound to the head while sitting in the back of a police car sounds familiar, you’ve probably heard of the Chavis Carter case.
