Tuesday, Robert Kerns, former Montgomery County Republican Committee chairman, was arrested and charged with 19 counts, including rape of an unconscious victim.
The alleged incident occurred in October after a GOP dinner at the Radice restaurant in Whitpain Township, where he put Ambien in an employee’s drink. According to a press release from the District Attorney’s office, Kerns was riding in a vehicle with the employee. During the ride, Kerns opened a bottle of wine and talked the employee into drinking it. The woman passed out and after that, the DA claims Kern raped the woman in the car. According to the woman, Kerns took her to her house and raped her again.
After the accusations went public, Kerns stepped down from his position in the Republican committee in November.
He surrendered on Tuesday.
District Attorney Risa Freman announced the arrest and charges Tuesday morning.
- Rape of an unconscious victim
- Rape of a substantially impaired person
- Sexual assault
- Aggravated assault without consent
- Aggravated assault of a person unaware penetration was occurring
- Possession of an instrument of crime with intent
- Possession of a controlled substance
- Tampering with evidence
- Multiple counts of assault
Freman also accused Kerns of being “predatory and manipulative” and said in many rape cases, there are usually other rapes by the same person that go unreported. The District Attorney urged any other who have been raped by Kerns to come forward. She also commended the alleged victim in this case.
I give great credit to the victim in this case, she was extremely courageous in coming forward and sharing what happened to her. I think she should be commended.
