On the two year anniversary of a hate crime against a gay couple who resided at The Springs gated community in Ranch Mirage, California, another attack has taken place. On February 13, 2015, Matt Spain, Head of Security for The Springs Country Club was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon against two elderly men.
Last month, a story about the gay bashing that occurred at The Springs came out and here’s a brief overview:
On February 17, 2013 a gay resident of The Springs was brutally attacked by board members at a Homeowners Association (HOA) meeting. The two men attended the Board of Directors annual HOA election proceedings where the victim’s spouse was a candidate. Gay slurs were shouted by board members and they attacked one of the gay men, who was epileptic, causing permanent brain injury. David Archer, former employee of the Riverside County Sherriff’s Department, was the head of security at the time of the attack and held several residents at gunpoint, keeping them from coming to the aid of the victim.
A Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) was filed by the attackers against the victim and his partner in the spring of 2013 and was subsequently dismissed. Testimony disclosed that Archer had been directed to bring a gun to the annual meeting by Board President David Rothstein and Secretary Basil Xipolitos.

On the second anniversary of the 2013 hate crime, The Springs is once again the site of another questionable incident. Matthew Spain, Head of Security for The Springs Country Club, was charged with attacking an elderly male couple, beating them in the head with a security radio multiple times and sending them to the hospital.
It should be noted that Matt Spain has a relationship with David Archer. Both were previously Sheriff’s Deputies, worked together and have familial relations.
“Officers said the verbal argument turned into a physical altercation where Spain struck one of the victims with his handheld radio multiple times. Spain and the two victims were taken to Eisenhower Medical Center for treatment.
The Rancho Mirage Police Department didn’t say how the other man was injured. Spain was later arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.”
One blogger for the Cactus Sun even referred to The Springs as the “notoriously violent Springs Country Club.”
It should also be noted that Spain was hired soon after the February 2013 attack on the Epileptic gay male. Below are two screengrabs from the March 2013 Springs Newsletter:
Riverside County Sherriff’s department records show that Matthew Spain, Head of Security for The Springs Country Club, had a long rap sheet of arrests before being hired by The Springs Country Club.
- He was a Riverside County Sheriff Dept Deputy until he was fired on the job with Vicodin in his system.
- He had a history of excessive violence during his job as a Deputy.
- He was arrested in March 2007 for burglary and fraud of prescription drugs, and again in October 2008 for being under the influence of controlled substances, while remaining on the Riverside County Sheriff Department as a Deputy.
Why would The Springs knowingly hire a man with so many arrests? It is definitely curious considering the Spring’s history of bloody violence.
